January brings all things healthy and virtuous to the forefront – so we are doing our part with three hormone balancing smoothies to kick off the new year.
It seems we are programmed to think about a healthy start to the new year – goals and or resolutions are made and promises to eat more greens and add healthy new items to our diets get added to our “to-do” list.
In that vein, as we age we are also fighting our hormones and dealing with the onset of menopause in addition to dealing with our teens fighting their own hormonal battles 🙂
I’m always interested in new things that come to light to help out with the symptoms of menopause and or aging and smoothies are always a great way to get in a bunch of goodness easily.
We recently discussed collagen and all of its benefits. Find it HERE.
I have recently been experimenting with Maca and Oat Milk – my two “newest” smoothie additions.
Here are three NEW hormone balancing smoothies to add to your breakfast rotation, or for that afternoon slump.
Dragon Fruit Cauliflower

Weird right? But so delicious. There are a few odd ingredients in this smoothie but I figure if you are going to make a smoothie, better make it worth your while and get all the good stuff in. This smoothie features a Dragon Fruit Blend you can buy at your local grocery store.
I choose this one all the time because it features dragon fruit, strawberries, pineapple and mango in one bag (yum), and some of the other blends have coconut – an ingredient my daughter doesn’t love – but your family might!
This recipe also features frozen cauliflower rice which might seem weird, but I pick this up when it is on its last legs at the grocery store and on sale – then I throw it in the freezer for smoothie goodness. Cauliflower is high in fibre, great for stabilizing mood, mild in taste and low in calories. Works on menopausal women and hormonal teens 🙂
Chia is the perfect add-in for menopausal support – it has a high protein content which helps ward off weight gain, and additionally it aids in preventing cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis both more common in the post menopausal years.
Dragon Fruit Cauliflower Smoothie
Ingredients
1/2 cup Dragon Fruit Blend
1/2 cup frozen Cauliflower Rice
1 cup Almond / Oat / or Coconut Milk
1 tbsp Chia Seeds
2 tbsp Plain Skyr or Plain Greek Yogurt
1 tsp pure maple syrup
Optional: handful of spinach if you want to add some greens!
Throw everything in a blender and blend until smooth!
Cherry Pomegranate

Did you know that cherries have surprising health benefits?
Here are just a few:
- They Improve Sleep Quality – who doesn’t need that in their pre / post menopausal years?
- They help with symptoms of arthritis
- They are rich in antioxidants
- They help with exercise recovery – great for your active teens
- They are easy to add to SHAKES!! 🙂
Pomegranates have anti-viral, and anti-tumor properties, and contain vitamins and minerals including calcium, potassium, zinc, vitamin K, niacin, and folate as well as antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E.
Enjoy this surprising combination with a scoop of COLLAGEN and you are all set.

Cherry Pomegranate Smoothie
Ingredients
1/2 cup frozen cherries
1/2 cup frozen Pomegranates
1 cup spinach
1 cup unsweetened plain Almond / Oat / or Coconut Milk
1 tbsp Hemp seeds
1 tbsp Collagen
(if you like a little added sweetness, add a tsp of honey)
Throw everything in a blender and blend until smooth!
Chocolate Almond Butter Avocado

Chocolate – GOOD. Almond Butter – GOOD. Avocado – GOOD?? Yup – Avocado is the healthy, “good fat” addition to a smoothie that adds creaminess without the cream! And here is the best news: you can now find avocado in the frozen foods aisle in your grocery store. This means a more cost effective addition to your smoothie, and the ability to have access to affordable avocado any time of the year. YAY!
Did you know that avocado fights off anxiety and depression through its folate content? If you are finding that your hormone swings are bringing on additional anxiety, give avocado a try.
This smoothie also uses my new fav. oat milk (although of course, you can use any kind of milk you wish) which helps prevent anemia – something our teen girls can struggle with during their cycle. Oat milk is loaded with protein and fibre and also aids in strengthening bones which bonus for women heading into menopause.
Flax is old news by now (but still awesome for evening out hormonal swings), but do you know about MACA? Maca is a plant native to Peru that is said to have a multitude of health boosting properties.
MACA
According to Organic Facts, “The health benefits of maca include relief from problems related to menstruation and menopause, while it also aids in balancing hormones and boosting fertility in women.
Maca helps in increasing energy levels, improving sexual health, and boosting bone health. It also helps in building stamina, maintaining a healthy immune system, and improving healthy skin.
Maca has antidepressant properties and under stressful conditions – it also promotes homeostasis (balance within the body) as well.”
I’m new to Maca, but have started including it in all of our smoothies. It is kind of “earthy” in taste, but is hidden within the other ingredients so hopefully you can hide it successfully from your family.
Chocolate Almond Butter Avocado
Ingredients
1/4 cup Avocado
1 medium frozen banana
1 cup Unsweetened Vanilla Oat Milk
1 tbsp Almond Butter
1 tbsp Maca
1 tbsp good quality cocoa OR cacao powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
*1 tsp pure maple syrup (to taste)
Optional: handful of frozen blueberries if you want to add some additional fibre!
*when I make this for myself, I omit the sweetener, but my teens don’t like the bitter, “plant” taste the maca brings, so I add a little for them
Throw everything in a blender and blend until smooth!
I know in January we are all bombarded with all things “healthy.” With new diets to try, food fads and promises of ultimate wellness, it’s hard not to get overwhelmed by the influx of info. But – if you love smoothies, and you want to give these new combos a try – let us know what you think of our three NEW hormone balancing smoothies!

Wishing you much success with your goals for a new decade!
